Cosmic rays were discovered in by an Austrian physicist, Victor Hess, who flew simple instruments aboard balloons and showed that high-speed particles arrive at Earth from space (Figure ). The term “cosmic ray” is misleading, implying it might be like a ray of light, but we are stuck with the name. Cosmic ray, a high-speed particle—either an atomic nucleus or an electron—that travels through space. Most of these particles come from sources within the Milky Way Galaxy and are known as galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The rest of the cosmic rays originate either from the Sun or, almost certainly in the case of the particles with the highest energies, outside the Milky Way Galaxy.

Henrik Svensmark (born ) is a physicist and professor in the Division of Solar System Physics at the Danish National Space Institute (DTU Space) in Copenhagen. He is known for his theory on the effects of cosmic rays on cloud formation as an indirect cause of global mater: Technical University of Denmark. The book deals with the discovery and study of cosmic rays as well as the development of cosmic-ray physics. Early investigations of primary radiation are reviewed, the formation of secondary cosmic rays is examined, and solar modulation of cosmic-ray intensity is discussed. The charge and energy spectra of primary cosmic rays are investigated along with model simulations of showers, the.

March 5, Cosmic rays are bad--and they're getting worse. That's the conclusion of a new paper just published in the research journal Space Weather. The authors, led by Prof. Nathan Schwadron of the University of New Hampshire, show that radiation from deep space is dangerous and intensifying faster than previously expected. The story begins.   Cosmic rays are protons or atomic nuclei (stripped of electrons), produced in high-energy space events, and which cascade into particle showers when impacting the upper atmosphere, as .

Fully updated for the second edition, this book is aimed at graduate students and established researchers interested in learning the fundamentals of particle astrophysics. It is designed as a self-contained introductory text for graduate students studying high-energy cosmic rays, gamma-ray astronomy and neutrino by: Get this from a library.

Cosmic rays astrophysical, high energy and heliospheric processes: proceedings of the 13th European Cosmic Ray Symposium, Geneva, Switzerland, July [P K. More importantly, cosmic rays constitue the background, and in some cases possibly the signal, for the more exotic unconfirmed hypothesized particles such as monopoles and sparticles.

Concentrating on the highest energy cosmic rays, this book describes where they originate, acquire energy, and interact, in accreting neutron stars, supernova 4/5(1).

Coverage is expanded to include new content on high energy physics, the propagation of protons and nuclei in cosmic background radiation, neutrino astronomy, high-energy and ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, sources and acceleration mechanisms, and atmospheric muons and by: This book provides an exhaustive account of the origin and dynamics of cosmic rays.

Divided into three parts, it first gives an up-to-date summary of the observational data, then -- in the following theory section -- deals with the kinetic description of cosmic ray plasma. The underlying. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena.

It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that Cosmic rays 92 book content should be useful to a. Cosmic Rays is a two-part book that first elucidates the discovery, nature, and particles produced by cosmic rays.

This part also looks into the primary cosmic radiation; radio waves from the galaxy; extensive air showers; origin of cosmic rays; and other cosmic radiations.

Part 2 consists of reprinted papers involving cosmic Edition: 1. The Origin of Cosmic Rays examines the astrophysical phenomena that cause cosmic rays. The title details the concerns in the study of tracing the sources of cosmic rays. The text presents the primary cosmic rays on earth, and then proceeds to tackling ling the cosmic magnetic bremsstrahlung radio emission and cosmic rays in the Edition: 1.

They are high energy particles that move through space at nearly the speed of cosmic rays are atomic nuclei stripped of their atoms with protons (hydrogen nuclei) being the most abundant type but nuclei of elements as heavy as lead have been measured.

A fascinating explanation of scientific research into an alternative hypothesis of contemporary climate change. Briefly, the theory is that (1) cloud nucleation is promoted by cosmic rays (charged atoms ejected from exploding stars at relativistic speeds) that hit the Earth's atmosphere; and (2) the volume of those particles that hit the Earth varies with the long-term path of the Sun through 4/5.

Through this cosmic ray exposure in the shuttle, the main character, Terrill ascends as a new form who can shape his body into superpowered Ray of light. A couple months later in Blue Bolt 6, Nov by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, we have a MODOK like character who started out as humanoid and evolved by bombarding himself with cosmic rays.
